Frequently Asked Questions

We aim to be as transparent as we can about our animals, farm, and business.

Cost - Part 1: Aren't your goats eating for free ? Why do we have to pay for that ? The only part of targeted grazing that in and of itself is "free" to us is the act of the goats eating the vegetation. However, owning goats requires tremendous overhead costs, as does the act of transporting them and setting up temporary fencing. Goat ownership includes the cost of the animals themselves, veterinary care and medical intervention, feed and hay when they are not working, fencing and shelter at our farm, a tractor and implements to maintain their pastures, never-ending farm improvements and repairs, etc, etc, etc. The targeted grazing season in Indiana is only ~6 months of the year, which means the goats are on our farm the other 6 months. Our expenses for getting the goats to you is also more than you would think: a truck and trailer (properly plated and insured) are required, as is temporary fencing and a charger, portable mineral and water containers, and commercial liability insurance are just a few of our operating costs. There are also business expenses to ensure we are in compliance with the various regulations. We can assure you that our costs are much more affordable than owning a herd of goats yourself !

Cost - Part 2: How much do your targeted grazing services cost ? To ensure the most straight-forward pricing we can, we price "per acre." Including setup, daily checks, teardown, and the time the goats are on your property, our average per acre price is $800-$1,200. Project specific pricing is based on accessibility to the site, difficulty of manual land clearing (for fence setup), and density of growth.

Cost - Part 3: How much is it to rent your goats for "fun" events (yoga, birthday parties, petting zoos, etc) ? The cost for these type of events is very specific to the situation. Distance from our farm, the number (and size) of goats requested, and the time you would like us there are three of the main factors that will influence this cost. Check out our "Rent Our Goats for Fun" page to learn more.

Why/how did you get into targeted grazing and become a GOTG affiliate ? Hannah has ALWAYS loved goats. Her phone is full of pictures of her and goats, going years back...petting zoos, state fairs, her time as an ACO, goat farms, etc. She even have a goat hoof tattoo (it's part of a complete animal tracks series) ! She has dreamed of owning goats for many years, but the logistics just never shook out to do so. Then, she found a great guy (Jay), and together, they found a 5 acre property that was destined to become pasture. Her dreams of owning goats were being realized ! They don't exactly remember how the next part came to life, but essentially...they started realizing how expensive goats would be to own and Hannah stumbled upon the concept of targeted grazing. Down the rabbit hole she went, and they found Goats On The Go ! Now, they are able to combine their love for the species with (hopefully) some income, all while helping landowners reclaim their property !
